My podcast, Red Rattigan, examines applications of dynamic symmetry theory across a broad spectrum, ranging from the fundamental principles of physics to the complex intricacies of human society and beyond.

1 Introduction

Dynamic symmetry theory: an introduction (4'25")
In this opening episode, I sketch the basic idea behind dynamic symmetry: the claim that complex systems often work best at a shifting balance point between rigid order and unconstrained disorder. I outline the philosophical roots of the concept, show how it differs from simple “edge of chaos” slogans, and explain why turning it into a precise mathematical framework matters for physics, biology and social systems. The talk sets up the questions that later episodes pursue in more specialised contexts.

2 Phase Transitions

The order–disorder continuum in phase transitions (8'51")
This episode focuses on phase transitions as the natural home for dynamic symmetry. I look at how systems move between ordered and disordered states in contexts ranging from magnets and fluids to evolutionary dynamics and market cycles. The discussion highlights critical points, long‑range correlations and emergent structure, asking whether a symmetry between order and disorder can help organise these phenomena into a single conceptual picture. I also suggest what kinds of quantitative predictions such a perspective might eventually support.

3 Traffic Flow

The dynamics of traffic dis/order (10'40")
Here I shift to a concrete, everyday example: traffic. The talk examines how queues, jams and free flow illustrate the tension between individual randomness and collective structure on the road. I use simple scenarios and thought experiments to show how traffic can act as a macroscopic laboratory for studying dynamic symmetry, and why it may offer analogies to both quantum behaviour and spacetime geometry. The aim is to make the theory feel tangible by grounding it in patterns most listeners have experienced directly.

4 The Arrow of Time

The arrow of time: a balance of entropy and order (19'00")
This longer episode takes on the arrow of time and entropy from a dynamic‑symmetry standpoint. I revisit the familiar story of increasing disorder, then argue that many real systems display a subtler balance in which pockets of order continually emerge and decay against a background of thermodynamic flow. The discussion ranges across thermodynamics, cosmology and information theory, asking how time’s direction might be understood in terms of shifting balances of stability and fluctuation rather than a one‑way slide into chaos.
